Behind every great woman at Wimbledon is...well, probably a pretty good coach, for a start. But many are also cheered on by their dedicated Husbands And Boyfriends.
Forget the WAGs, people; we bring you the Wimbledon HABs of 2019. Here is your guide to some of the men who are rooting for the tennis champions in their lives...
Wade, the boyfriend of British number one Johanna Konta, is a photographer who used to work for the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) as a videographer. The couple live together in south-west London and have demonstrated their commitment to one another by becoming the joint owners of a dog.
According to Wade’s social media accounts, he is the director of a creative services agency called Running Iron and the founder of William Wade Watches (tagline: “Simple, well designed timepieces that will stand the test of time”). Its website is “coming soon” because, “We are still working behind the scenes on our incredible watches.”
The couple tend to keep their private life together relatively private, although Wade did post a “date night” picture online last year, and Konta gave us a peek inside their relationship in Hello magazine this week. "My boyfriend empowers me," she said. "He encourages me to trust my own decisions and be who I am, because he says I’m awesome – so therefore I should believe it, too.".
Lee married Caroline Wozniacki, the Danish former world number one, in Tuscany at the end of last month. Serena Williams was among the bridesmaids and Angelique Kerber, the German former world number one, among the guests.
Lee is an American former professional basketball player, who met Wozniacki in November 2015. The couple announced their engagement two years later, around the same time he announced his retirement from the NBA.
Like Wade, he can reliably be found on Twitter, loyally retweeting his beloved’s tweets.
'I think David is very positive and he has a lot of energies and he sees well in everything and people in general', Wozniacki told Elle magazine earlier this year. “He is a very open person and he is a big help when it comes to my tennis, and he never said in any moment that there are things that I should not or I cannot do.”
Serena Williams married Ohanian in November 2017 and together they have a baby daughter who is also called Alexis. (Look, they can do what they want: they’re Serena and Alexis - and Alexis.) Ohanian co-founded Reddit, a social news website, and Initialized Capital, a San Francisco-based early stage venture capital firm. His successful career as a tech entrepreneur once led Forbes to dub him “mayor of the internet”.
He met his wife by chance at a hotel in Rome back in 2015 and they reportedly began dating in June that year. Earlier this year, Ohanian shared the secrets of the success of his relationship with the US tennis champion: “You have to show up. You have to be supportive. These are the things that matter.”
Ashleigh Barty, the Australian world number one, and her boyfriend Garry Kissick have been described as “the most normal couple in tennis”. But Kissick is not in fact in tennis, he’s in golf, playing the sport professionally as a trainee with the Professional Golfers’ Association. The couple reportedly met at Brooklands Gold Club in Queensland during a round of golf in 2016.
They too have puppies together.
Remko de Rijke
Kiki Bertens, the Dutch number four seed, announced her engagement to Remko de Rijke, a physiotherapist, in November. He proposed during a holiday in Bali and, according to Bertens, “the ring [was] too small, but that does not matter at all.”
Don’t worry, she has since had it adjusted to fit. The wedding preparations have been proceeding apace and the happy couple plan to get married in Holland at the end of the year.
